Optimizing every student’s opportunity to achieve their potential is at the heart of Gabbinbar State School’s commitment to all students.
The Student Support Service monitors the service provided to each student, recommends levels of support, prioritises referral of students to other services provided within the school community, and facilitates the provision of extra resources for students with special needs.
Gabbinbar State School receives service from a number of personnel who visit regularly to provide support for students, parents, teachers and other members of the school community.
- The Guidance Officer provides support for academic learning as well as social, emotional and behavioural issues for individuals and small groups.
- The Speech-Language Pathologist provides assistance through assessment, therapy and home programs for voice production, auditory processing and development of language skills.
- The Behaviors Advisory Support Team operates in conjunction with the whole school community, including care-givers, to provide support and strategies to overcome a range of behavioural difficulties.
- Advisory Visiting Teachers for Physical, Visual, Hearing and Autistic Spectrum Disorder provide consultation and practical assistance for students, parents and teachers on request.
Special Education Program (SEP)
Gabbinbar State School’s Special Education Program supports the delivery of inclusive education by providing quality support services to students with low incidence disabilities, their teachers and parents. Disability categories include Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Speech/Language Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Physical Impairment and Intellectual Impairment.
Multi-disciplinary teams including students, parents, school staff, specialists, community and government agencies work together to provide advice and advocacy and to develop programs tailored to meet the special needs of each student with disabilities. We aim to create safe and supportive learning environments with flexible allocation of resources and delivery of educational programs.
Programs offered include supported access to the regular classroom curriculum with adjustments having been collaboratively planned, a regular curriculum with significant adjustments at a developmentally appropriate level, and an alternate, life skills based program.
We endeavour to recognise the unique abilities, talents and circumstances of each student, and implement programs that develop individual pathways.
Learning Support is another Student Support Service available at Gabbinbar State School.
In all primary schools there are students with learning difficulties who need assistance to access the curriculum. These students may experience short term or persistent problems in literacy, numeracy and/or learning how to learn.
Other students may have learning disabilities that manifest as persistent long-term problems and may need a high level of support.
All students with learning difficulties need to work in a supportive and inclusive environment, where teachers and support personnel work together to provide strategies to assist them to access the curriculum.
At Gabbinbar State School, a Support Teacher will assist class teachers to build support for these students into the class environment and into their classroom units of work. Learning support may take place within classrooms, with small groups or with one-on-one interactions.
Gifted students may vary in terms of the nature of their abilities and in their level of giftedness. Gabbinbar State School seeks to create a learning environment that challenges and supports students to pursue excellence and develop a passion for lifelong learning.
Some of the exciting programs being offered at Gabbinbar State School include opportunities to develop oral language skills, phonological awareness, enhancing independent reading and writing skills, attaining real life maths skills, a chess club, problem solvers club and an exercise program designed to help children with their sensory motor development.
