Our vision is that Gabbinbar is a beautiful place to belong, inspire and grow. At Gabbinbar we are committed to providing an environment that is stimulating and challenging with a curriculum that motivates and engages students.
Following a multi-age philosophy our classes are divided into Departments -Years 4 and 5 (Intermediates) and Years 6 and 7 (Seniors) with two teachers in each double teaching area. Students remain with the same teachers for the two years in each Department where possible. They enter the department as the juniors and leave as the leaders responsible for providing a role model for incoming students. Teachers know their students well and less time is lost in establishing routines and getting to know students needs, abilities and interests at the start of the school year.
Our Curriculum is purposeful, linked to the world in which we live and relates to the needs, interests and abilities of the students. Targeted intervention is provided to students not meeting the State and National benchmarks in literacy and numeracy.
All students in the Senior Department are trained in the Peer Support Program. This is a leadership program where students undertake two days of training with Gabbinbar staff who have been trained as facilitators before becoming leaders (Year 7) and helpers (Year 6) themselves. Students then conduct weekly half hour lessons with small groups of students from Prep to Year 5 in Terms 2-3. Senior Class Teachers assist leaders to rehearse lessons prior to delivery. Lessons follow a chosen theme from the Peer Support Program.
Students in Year 4 complete a bike safety program in term 4. Senior students participate in Interschool sport on Friday afternoons in terms 1, 2 in a range of sports. In term 4 Students in the Year 7 and interested Year 6 students participate in weekly classes with Centenary Heights State High School to ensure a smooth transition to High School. Other High Schools also provide transition programs for students intending to attend their school.
